I'd like to start this review by expressing the absolute honor and respect I have for Steve Grimmett. I had seen him perform at The Vault in New Bedford, MA and it was a memorable performance. To have the courage and endurance to grace the stage after a long recovery from a right leg amputation was inspiring. After his amputation in January of 2017, he returned to the stage six months later and he puts everything he has into his performance. If you get a chance to see Steve Grimmett's Grim Reaper live, you won't regret a moment.

At the Gates is their fifth studio album and it is an album that speaks of Steve's struggles over the last few years. It features new bassist Julian Hill and drummer Mark Pullin, alongside Steve and his long-term guitarist Ian Nash. ‚ÄčThe musicianship is tight and each plays well off one another and the rhythms flow perfectly.

As we build through each of the 11 songs you feel the weight of the world that he experienced in his struggles and you also feel the rising above of his challenges. At the end of it, it felt like a release, an exhilaration of plunging through the darkest times in life to come out free. The album is in the classic style of heavy metal. Although we have multiple genres and subgenres in metal, any older metalhead worth their salt will always have an affiliation for the classic style as it brings to mind a simpler time when life was fun and you just wanted to rock. Much love to Steve Grimmett's Grim Reaper for keeping that style alive and making it flourish still in ever changing times.

"At the Gates" and "Only When I Sleep" are phenomenal bursts of metal, with all its driving power and fuel. Most haunting track on the album was "Shadow in the Dark" where you can palpate the fear, terror, and pain in its lyrics and deep heavy sounds. At the Gates is a beautifully woven masterpiece.
