For whatever reason, as I head to the tail end of summer and autumn whispers its sweet crispness to me, I like to celebrate with some progressive and power metal. There isn't much closer to metal heaven than cruising along to this type of metal blasting through your speakers and choosing to take the scenic route just to embrace that delicate spine tingle you get from such fine works. I get to add Silver Talon to my collection of driving joy. Their current EP, Becoming a Demon, is a masterpiece that doesn't just flirt with greatness, but they invite it back to their place for a drink.

From the remnants of Portland, Oregon's Spellcaster, guitarists Bryce Vanhoosen and Sebastian Silva, Gabe Franco on bass, and Colin Vranizan on drums have created along with vocalist Wyatt Powell (Sanctifyre) this entity of Silver Talon. They lean heavily on their main riffs throughout the songs and yet the band’s excellent riffing and tendency to subtly mix things up prevents this from being a major flaw.

Becoming A Demon is music for musicians by musicians. It is earnest and beautiful, its sound simple and direct, with passion and contemplation being the clear focus of the music. It’s a symphony of musicianship, strands woven together into a thing of beauty. And what power it speaks as the vocals descend on your ears.
