Fierce is the sound of NY-based metal quartet Despyre with their latest album release Rise Up. This is metal that pumps you up, motivates you, and is down to earth and honest about real life. Their band name is a combination of the terms despair and inspire. Indeed with a listen to their music you will feel that what can cause you to despair, whether it be depression, addiction, or everyday life problems, can also be the source and strength for inspiration. Some express it via paintings or sculptures, some write prose; Despyre turns these things into ferocious music.

"Liberate" starts us off with the sounds of chaos-sirens, crashes, screaming, all of which can sound like what may be going on in your mind in the midst of a catastrophe. The song will metaphorically lead you to desire to free yourself of these horrors. The song "Regret" has me thinking that even though we all make mistakes in life, we learn from them (some of us anyhow). Fast forward to "Complicated" and if you listen to the riffs they certainly do sound complex and labyrinthine. If you would indulge in a visual, the brain has these grooves and depressions called sulci and I like to imagine that hearing good shredding tends to sink right into these brain grooves.

"Underground" is my favorite song on the album and the very beginning is spine-tingling when vocalist Rob first sings the intro. In a beautiful haunting voice he begins the song with, "If you don't walk with me, I will walk alone," and it hit home for me. That is exactly how I am with the people around me and I have said many times that in the end I am my own best company. It's a song that rages about people who judge you or try to keep you down, a song that encourages you to be real you in spite of others. I dig the hint of hardcore axe work in the song.

This album is nothing short of a staggering ride where if you listen closely, it will awaken something inside of you.
