      More Vinnie!

Interview with UFO Guitarist and Solo Artist Vinnie Moore

      By Thomas Amoriello Jr.

      Boston Rock Radio

Last month Vinnie Moore released his 9th studio recording Soul Shifter.  Most rock fans of the band UFO would know that for the last 16 years he has provided stability within the group appearing on 6 of their studio albums and on all tours, making him the longest tenured guitarist in the band's 50 year history.  He also had a brief stint in Alice Cooper's band in the early 1990's.  Vinnie will appear in the New England listening area next year on February 18th at the Vault in New Bedford, MA on guitar for UFO.  He is truly a wonderful musician!  Boston Rock Radio would like to thank Vinnie Moore for this exclusive interview.

YOUR NEW ALBUM SOUL SHIFTER WAS RELEASED ON OCTOBER 9TH,  HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO FINISH YOUR NEW SOLO ALBUM IN BETWEEN TOURING BREAKS WITH UFO?

It took about a year in a half which drives me crazy to think about. Any time I was home I would work on it religiously. The touring definitely made it harder to finish, and so did my usual OCD fueled pickiness. It was a load off my back to finally get it finished.

WHAT WAS THE MOST CHALLENGING AND MOST SATISFYING ASPECTS OF YOUR LATEST PROJECT?

Having the time to work on it was probably the biggest challenge. The most satisfying was getting to the point where I felt happy with the way it turned out, and then hearing that people liked it.

THERE ARE GUEST SPOTS FROM WELL KNOWN MUSICIANS SUCH AS JORDAN RUDESS AND RUDY SARZO ON THERE.  DID YOU INVITE THEM TO CONTRIBUTE THEIR "OWN THING" TO YOUR SONGS OR WHERE THERE SOME PREDETERMINED INSTRUCTIONS?

I always prefer that musicians who play on my stuff add their own personality and feel. Jordan plays some piano solos so of course I just wanted him to improvise and do his thing. With Rudy and the other bassists, the parts were more defined by the structure of the song. But there was still room for them to put their own stamp on it within the framework of the tune.

WHO ARE A FEW MUSICIANS THAT YOU WOULD BE THRILLED TO HAVE ON FUTURE RECORDINGS OR TO PLAY LIVE WITH THAT YOU HAVEN'T WORKED WITH YET?

Well, I always wanted to do something with Paul Rodgers.

SOUL SHIFTER IN AN INSTRUMENTAL RECORD AND YOUR TENURE IN UFO IS WINDING DOWN,  DO YOU FORESEE YOURSELF DOING A SONG ORIENTED HARD ROCK ALBUM IN THE FUTURE WITH A VOCALIST?

Definitely. That has been on my mind for quite a long time. I have many songs in need of a vocalist.

DO YOU EVER THINK ABOUT COMPOSING BEYOND THE GUITAR SUCH AS FILM SCORE TYPE WORK?

It has crossed my mind but there has never been time and I have never explored that territory. It’s not likely but ya never know.

DO YOU TEACH LESSONS VIA SKYPE OR PRIVATELY IN DELAWARE? ANY PLANS FOR A VINNIE MOORE METHOD BOOK?

This is something I have never done. I have done tons of guitar seminars over the years but I have never taught one on one. I don’t have interest in it to be honest. I don’t have the patience or the experience to do it. It’s definitely a different skill set. There are lots of private teachers who have been doing it for years and have it down. I don’t feel this as my calling.

WHAT ARE A FEW OF YOUR FAVORITE FILMS AND/OR DOCUMENTARIES RELATED TO MUSIC THAT YOU HAVE ENJOYED ON THE ROKU LATELY?

I really liked the Jeff Beck documentary. There is a Keith Richards one on Netflix that is really good too.  I just watched The Making of Motown on Showtime and that was great. I love ‘The Making Of’ things where they go into a studio and solo out parts of a song and elaborate on them. I just saw The Making of Damn the Torpedoes (Tom Petty) last week. I love this sort of thing.

WHAT IS IN THE WORKS MUSICALLY FROM VINNIE MOORE IN 2020? TOURS, GUITAR CLINICS, GUEST SPOTS?

I have a solo tour in Europe in the middle of January. Then a UFO USA tour starts on February 13 in Minnesota. That’s going to be cold one…..ouch.  We will be playing New Bedford on Feb 18. I am thinking that will be cold also. Haha. I think there is a UFO tour of South America starting in May. So it will be a busy start for 2020. Basically my plan is always to keep on rolling.
