Atreyu 20th Anniversary Tour

Live Show Review

The Strand, Providence, RI

November 2, 2019

Kicking off on October 19th at the Las Rageous Festival in Las Vegas, Atreyu is sweeping across the US performing their longest live set ever as part of their 20 Year Anniversary Tour.  I caught the show at The Strand in Providence, RI and enjoyed it immensely.  This was not my first time seeing this five piece from Orange County, California, but it certainly was the most enjoyable.

Supporting Atreyu on this tour were Santa Cruz, He Is Legend, Tempting Fate, and Whitechapel. Each brought their own unique sound, which made for a killer concert. Upon entering the venue, I was a little surprised to see that the crowd was kind of sparse. However, I was excited to be able to scoot up front and stage right, to take it all in without being slammed by the moshers. As each band finished and I looked back, I could no longer see the back of the spacious room, as Atreyu fans were not going to miss this anniversary tour.

Atreyu decided to play a song for each year they were celebrating, with the 20 song setlist being picked by fans online before the tour.  A complete list of the songs chosen by the fans is below. The crowd was cheering even before the first note was played. Without delay, the band burst into “The Time Is Now” which is probably the most well known song, as it was a big radio hit. The diehards, however, were singing along with every word and the band members smiled and pointed in appreciation.  “Bleeding Mascara,” Ex’s And Oh’s,” and “The Crimson” seemed to get the biggest response. Alex Varkatzas worked the crowd, jumping off the stage to the barrier below, as the frenzied fans screamed along into the microphone and many managed to get a high five. Bassist, Porter McKnight, even jumped off the stage and continued to play as he joined the moshers. There was also some crowd surfing, but not too much to be a distraction. Drummer Brandon Saller, along with sharing vocal duties, spoke to the crowd showing appreciation for the support of the latest album, In Our Wake, but also for the continued support over the last two decades. My favorite song is “Lip Gloss and Black” off the bands 2002 album Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses and I was thrilled to hear it included.

For humor, I must mention the fan that was in the front row that got kicked out after several warnings from security. There were two male photographers in the pit, and this particular fan must have thought they had nice butts because he was continuously slapping them. Although completely obnoxious this was a first for me to see!

This was the best I’ve seen Atreyu. Their music has evolved exponentially over the years and they were bursting with creativity and they show no signs of slowing down anytime soon. There are several dates left on this tour, so make sure to catch it in a city near you.
