Live Show Review

Once Ballroom, Somerville, MA

Los Angeles-based three-piece Aesthetic Perfection have crafted a unique formula for success. They sport throat tattoos and black makeup, and attract fans from all across the metal genre spectrum. Yet, musically, they lean toward a dark pop sound, their set full of catchy, high-energy songs that are just too easy to dance to. That’s exactly what the band’s devoted fans did at the small, tightly packed Once Ballroom in Somerville, MA on Sunday, September 29th.

Living up to their name, Aesthetic Perfection’s set was just as exciting to watch as it was to listen to. There was no need for fancy lighting or LED projectors; the band—vocalist Daniel Graves, guitarist/keyboardist/bassist Elliott Berlin, and drummer Joe Letz—brought the magic all on their own. Berlin tossed his hair, jumped up on top of his keyboards, and even made his way offstage and into the crowd mid-shred, delivering a flashy-yet-tasteful performance that was full of surprises. Losing energy was not an option for this audience—they were moving and shaking right up until the final notes of the band’s encore, “Spit it Out.”

Aesthetic Perfection released their latest album, Into the Blackearlier this year. They played a solid mix of newer and older material, switching back and forth between their industrial sound from their earlier days, and their present-day electro-pop vibe. Graves’ screams and growls were full of passion and emotion, showing off his versatility as a vocalist. Both Berlin’s and Letz’s facial expressions and overall stage presence perfectly matched Graves’ in intensity.

After 20 years in the scene, Aesthetic Perfection’s passion and drive to create music, and their desire to connect with their fans fully and meaningfully during live shows, has not wavered one bit. They’ve been touring in support of Into the Black since April, and they’ll be wrapping up this current North American leg near the end of October, then heading back to Europe. In the meantime, fans can now pick up the deluxe version of Into the Blackfeaturing exclusive B-side tracks.
