      Denner's Inferno:

      The Afterlife of Michael Denner

      By Thomas Amoriello Jr.

      Boston Rock Radio

Denner's Inferno is the new contribution to the hard rock world from the legendary Danish guitarist Michael Denner.  As part of a quartet alongside Chandler Mogel (vocals), Flemming Muus (bass) and Bjarne T. Holm (drums) they had released their first single back in July with the full length In Amber soon to arrive on November 15th.  The Scandinavian premier rock/metal label Mighty Music will release the recording on LP, CD, Digital & Bundles including T-Shirt.

It is common knowledge in the metal word that Denner was an artistic force in the guitar stylings and songwriting department regarding his contributions to the Mercyful Fate albums such as Melissa (1983), Don't Break The Oath (1984) and also the King Diamond classics Fatal Portrait (1986) and Abigail (1987). This part of his life has been well documented on countless channels and beyond so for our exclusive Boston Rock Radio interview with Michael we have decided to give credence to his current artist statement Denner's Inferno.

BRR: Your new project Denner's Inferno returns to a 70's inspired vibe.  How long did it take for yourself along with Flemming Muus (Bass) and Bjarne Holm (Drums) to work out the instrumental arrangements before presenting the songs to vocalist Chandler Mogel to add vocals and lyrics?

We worked with the songs for six months before we sent them to Chandler but that also included vocals which I did myself and lyrics we did together with my friend and poet Jesper Harrits.  I actually kept the demos I sang and maybe one fine day we will release them as a special bonus for the fans.

BRR: The debut long play from Denner's Inferno entitled In Amber will officially be released on November 15th.  On the first single "Fountain of Grace" which appeared on a summer EP release you employ many colors of warm fuzzy guitar tones from your Flying V.  These organic sounds are sometimes missing from contemporary bands.  Was this done on the spot in the studio or were these tones pre-determined ideas during the arranging of the song?  Do you work from a home studio or do you have an engineer assist you?

I'm glad that you mention this, because there was a clear plan to make it sound like the 70's heavy rock album's close to my heart, but also the fact that there are is no tapping, sweeps or any tricks on the guitar parts this time, just pure old school lead work. Some of the recordings was done at home , but most of it in the studio assisted by Povl Kristian who was engineering and Flemming Muus my bass player who has the same love for the old stuff as I do.

BRR: After all of these years, do you have a regular guitar practice routine to help craft out solos and rhythms or do you have a loose approach when a project is underway?

I work quite spontaneously just letting the tape roll and then hope to hit something great.   If I plan guitar parts then some magic and "unexpected" will get lost in the process so this rarely is on my recordings.

BRR: On a humorous note, will you be selling copies of the Denner's Inferno record in your shop BEAT BOP in Copenhagen?  What are a few "prized" vinyls that are in your record collection or store that you would NEVER part with?

Oh yes!  It's important that people can drop by my shop for a signed copy and handshake, a cup of coffee and a selfie! Yes my gold and platinum records from working with Volbeat and Mercyful Fate and a lot of original progressive heavy rock albums will never leave my collection.

BRR: You have been on various record labels in the past with Mercyful Fate and King Diamond so how has it been working with the Danish label Mighty Music so far?

What I like most with Mighty Music is the personal angle.  I know these guys personally, they work just down the road from where I live so there is a lot of chatting, or even go out for a drink or dinner together. Also the fact that I can be honest and clear in the working process is a bonus for both sides.

BRR: Will there be any club or festival dates on the horizon from Denner's Inferno in 2020?

Oh yes, we just got a new booker, and there are already festival and club jobs in the pocket for 2020!
