      Living with the Low

Living with the Low is the latest release from Pennsylvanian pop-punk band Merit. The record dives into the trials and tribulations of lead singer Mike Dougherty’s various relationships. With the Wonder Years’ Matt Brasch and Nick Steinborn at the helm of this project, it’s no wonder the EP drips in pop punk essence.

The guitars and drums clash in 2000’s Vans Warped tour fashion from the get go on “Mediocrity Gets You,” off set by the crooning vocals that have become a staple of the genre. On “De-Spite Everything” a fast paced, heart racing blend of guitars highlight the strength of Dougherty’s vocals against the production. Meanwhile, “Woe, She’s a Gravedigger” offers a less chaotic sound than some of the others, with a somber tone about Dougherty’s broken heart.

Living with the Low brings the brash, off the cuff sound expected of a pop-punk band, but with lyrics that can hold their own in a more mature manner than the genre’s contemporaries.  However, the tongue in cheek titles, like “Anxiety is the New Black,” maintain an angst that hovers on nostalgia. Collectively, the EP stitches together heart wrenching tales of betrayal and personal growth that forge an original, yet familiar sound.
