Review By Nina McCarthy, Sr. Music Journalist

      Boston Rock Radio

What are friends for? Among her other fine qualities, my friend Catherine is good for acquainting me with some good music that may have otherwise escaped my notice. Last summer she introduced me to Southern California rockers, PUMP5 who came through my area when I was hospitalized, so I missed the show. With Catherine's urging, I took a listen online, was impressed, and we immediately added them into rotation on Boston Rock Radio and have been awaiting their new music.

The latest full length album, Full Service was released on April 5th through High Vol Music and it is straight up rock n’ roll with a slight nod to the Sunset Strip musically (definitely without the glam), yet still unique and modern. For some reason I can’t help but be reminded of Enuff Z’Nuff with Chip on vocals. Sometimes simple is more and that’s certainly is the case for this band.

Vocalist, Steven Barnett, has an enchanting voice that makes you sit back, relax and enjoy the ride. But don’t get comfortable yet, as opening track “Fight Song” blasts off with anthemic rhythm that makes you want to raise your fists in the air and sing along, which I imagine everyone would be doing during a live show. Things kick back a notch with “Painted Flowers,”  which was the featured single and certainly a good choice, as it is probably my top pick. Each track has its own vibe, making the 11 songs flow nicely with pleasant guitar riffs and an occasional touch of punk, meshed nicely with melodic clean vocals that would make it my choice music for a Sunday Summer drive along the coast or perhaps even pumping out of the boombox next to a bonfire.

PUMP5 is touring band that will be back out on the road this summer and claim to have a lively show. I won’t miss them this time...and you shouldn’t either! However, I do recommend that you pick up Full Service in the meantime so you will be prepared.
