Album Review by Allyson Kingsley, Music Journalist

Boston Rock Radio

Some of you may not enjoy an instrumental album so much as maybe the livelier ones with lyrics and vocals, but since being starstruck as a young lady watching Steve Vai shred on “The Audience is Listening” I cannot help but enjoy the music of instrumental shredders. From Yngwie Malmsteen to Steve Bello to Axel Rudi Pell there is something almost magical in the sorcery of these axe masters. So with that I have the honor to review Joe Stump's 11th album that is brimming with his brilliant fretwork.

We have no noodling here with songs such as “Hit the Deck” and “Facemelting Devastation.” The key to these recordings of the guitar gods is to crank that shit up as loud as your speakers can handle (and pay no heed to your angry neighbors). Such was the immense power of “Stratocastle” and “From the Maestro's Book” and at the end of the album, I was left breathless.

I can tell you from experience as I am struggling to learn to play guitar in my 40s that this is no easy feat. A guitarist is indeed an artist who carefully tends to his craft. Check out Symphonic Onslaught for its sheer beauty.
