      Yesterday Is History

      Review by Ariana Leo, Photojournalist

Hailing from Mendrisio, Switzerland, pop-punk/alternative four-piece Yesterday Is History are bursting with punchy, youthful energy and optimism, ready to take the scene by storm. On their latest EP, Circles (which the band considers an extension of their previous release, a concept EP entitled Frames), Yesterday Is History refine their unique sound and solidify their direction as musicians. The result is a fresh, upbeat collection of thoughtfully structured songs, showing true craftsmanship.

It isn’t often that you listen to an album for the first time alone and your room, and can immediately picture yourself getting into your car, rolling down your windows, cranking it loud, and hitting the repeat button for weeks on end. Circles has that contagiousness; that magical, magnetic effect. Each of the five tracks tells its own story (“Pages” particularly stands out), calling for deeper and more critical listening than your average pop-punk song. There isn’t a boring moment to be heard on the album.

Frontman Matteo Sulmoni’s voice is unique, distinctive, and all kinds of powerful, mixing grit and soulfulness and lending itself beautifully to YIH’s particular brand of rock. Catchy guitar riffs and driving, high-energy drum beats round out the band’s full, arena-performance-ready sound.

These five playlist-stopping songs just might make Circles the EP of the summer. Yesterday is History have a few festival shows lined up in support of their new release, which is available now on all streaming platforms via Sliptrick Records. They’ve also put out a fascinating music video for “Ricochet,” the fourth track off of Circles, which is definitely worth a watch.
