Before reading this review, I recommend you watch the video for "Monster Reborn.”

“Ever since I was very young

Voices have always answered questions for me

From the depth of my head

Is there someone else here inside”

These opening lyrics are beautifully sung in a haunting, yet beautiful way until the last word breaks into some smashing instrumentation and aggressive vocals, taking me totally by surprise in the song and recently premiered video for Fallen Legion’s “Monster Reborn.” Being about guilt building up inside oneself and being trapped within your own mental anguish, the listener can feel the pain of this tormented soul. The video was filmed and edited by Alan Tang (Senpai Media) and made me want to put on my leather jacket, have a drink with the gnomes, and head to a metal show near me. If that statement confuses you, then watch the video and start again.

Consisting of Josh Masterson (vocals), Jon Kal (bass), Nick Sauter (guitar), and Dylan Waybrant (drums), the band describes their sound as “energetic, unorthodox, progressive, spirited, and memorable.” Since forming in 2008, Downfall is the third EP from this Oshawa, ON band that have shared the stage with bands such as Soilwork, Havok, Unearth, Battlecross, and 36 Crazy Fists. Downfall was released in May of 2018, but the recent release of the video for “Monster Reborn” demands our renewed attention.

I’m impressed by the deep lyricism, not only on this song, but on this entire album that deals with, as the title suggests, one's downfall from stress, drugs, thoughts of suicide and the wrath of it all. The final track of the EP and a concluding message of hope, “New Skin,” is also noteworthy as it features Lindsay Schoolcraft from Cradle of Filth as guest vocalist and on keyboard. Progressive metal combined with Schoolcraft’s talent makes for a satisfying finale to this six track metal journey.

If you are a fan of Veil of Maya or Between The Buried and Me and have not heard of Fallen Legion, then check them out. I am pretty sure you will enjoy this offering. I am not a huge fan of screaming heavy lyrics, but even I truly enjoyed this full album despite that fact and will listen to it again. Either a label is going to scoop these guys up or they are going to take the world by storm all by themselves.
