I don’t often cover pop punk but I agreed to take a listen to Denver, Colorado’s The Swifts latest release All Sunshine.  After reading that they are the self proclaimed “Ultimate Dad Band” I was a little nervous, but admittedly so, I’m getting older and can appreciate some good “dad rock” and did in fact enjoyed what The Swifts had to offer. This 10 track album was produced and recorded by Ahrue Luster (Ill Nino lead guitarist/former Machine Head), so I knew it was going to have some substance to it.

The guitar riffs of the first track  “Snappy” quickly catches my attention and the punk vibe makes it impossible to sit still without at least bobbing my head. The songs take me back to a time in the early 90s when grunge and punk were easily found at the local dive bars and made for a great escape on Friday night after a long week at work. (Maybe this is where the “dad rock” comes in as I’m showing my age.) I am reminded of Blink-182’s “First Date” on this track. Along with the fast-paced punk rock, the lyrics of Mike Little and the melodious choruses throughout the album take more of a pop approach, being thought out yet left simple enough to be remembered.

The Swifts have “put every ounce of energy, pain, and joy they could muster” into creating this album and their hard work shines through. Some of you readers may be the die hard metal fans and not even like bands like Blink-182 or Fall Out Boy, so this album would not be for you. For those of you who dig some good pop punk, give yourself a treat and take a listen to All Sunshine.

I can imagine The Swifts putting on a high-energy live show and I would like to experience that. For now I will just have to be satisfied with bouncing around in my car until they hit New England.
