VIZA

The Unorthodox Revival I & II

Album Review By Mindy Stevenson, Music Journalist

Boston Rock Radio

How come no one told me? I was completely unprepared for the euphoric experience when I heard Viza’s new double EP The Unorthodox Revival I & II. Just a warning for any fans (and future fans) out there though, I’m sure my words will not do them justice but I will do my best.

This band is a lot of things and boring is not one. They come highly recommended by Serj Tankian (System of the Down) and have not only toured with Serj on several occasions but also Gogol Bordello (both of whom inspire their sound). Not only has Viza been around for over a decade but have also toured Europe extensively playing at such festivals as Hungary’s Sziget Festival, Sweden’s Malmofestivalen, Greece’s Rockwave Festival and more recently AfterShock Festival in October (only to name a few).

I could spend probably an entire page talking about the amount of tour time these guys pump out and from the sounds of it they kill it live. And it’s no wonder, all six Los Angeles native band members are very talented at what they play. With strong hardy vocals from K’noup, some kick ass oud and saz from Andrew Kzirian, entrancing duduk from Jivian Gasparyan Jr., on point percussion and drum work from Chris Daniel, and fabulous bass from Alex Khatcherian these guys take it to the next level. Influenced heavily by their Armenian and Greek backgrounds their sound is a good mix of modern rock, old day folk, and a seductive Mediterranean and Middle Eastern vibe.

In October, Viza released their new double EP albums The Unorthodox Revival (I & II). Having listened to all of the previous singles, albums and EPs they have released over the last 12 years (a lot) I would have to say that this set is one of the top. They seem to have rolled all of the best energy, lyrics and instrumentals into 12 exquisite songs.

The first EP, The Unorthodox Revival I, brings a bit of a folkish rock while The Unorthodox Revival II has more of a darker vibe to it. Both carry K’noup’s robust vocals and diverse instrumentals that should send shutters to any unique music lover. There is also a couple of somewhat strange songs on the EPs. One such song is “Tom Waits for Her” off the second EP. It’s a little story brought to us with a sexy low voice and ending with a very hard instrumental. It’s a short feverish glimpse into Viza’s world and I love it.

Now Viza can be listened to on most of your traditional media sites, Apple, Spotify, etc. However if you get a chance to listen on YouTube you will be treated to Alex Azblotsky’s outstanding artwork. All 12 of the songs were slowly released on YouTube and feature their own breathtaking piece. It’s a magical touch that puts Viza above and beyond and adds to the overall experience of the music itself.

Honestly these two EPs were a huge surprise to me and I dare say, with some help from Recording Engineer Yury Anisonyan, these albums are a seriously genius musical experience. If you appreciate brilliant instrumentals and vocal story you will love these guys as much as I do. And as if I was a broken record, if you see they are playing near you please take the chance to go see them.
