“Espen Bin Askeladden” Song/Video Review

By Allyson Kingsley, Music Journalist

Boston Rock Radio

Trollfest are self-described as “True Norwegian Balkan metal” and apparently, much like my beloved Alestorm, they are all about “alcohol, joy and music.” The song “Espen Bin Askeladden” is their first single and video release from their forthcoming album Norwegian Fairytales. Having formed in 2004 they have stood the test of time with 8 full length albums and multiple tours.

The song “Espen Bin Askeladden” is sung in Norwegian and supposedly represents a troll who protects nature and the mountains of Norway. Upon watching the video, I was impressed immediately for I am one that is easily amused. The video is hilariously entertaining and the costumes are awesome. If this is what female trolls look like they are in desperate need of the dollar shave club. The video very much reminds me of the covert humor of the British show Monty Python (a staple for easily amused metalheads). Besides the hilarity, they are actually in and of themselves excellent musicians.

So of course, I had to check out their available discography and spent a few hours enjoying that as well as their other equally mirthful videos. Check YouTube for “Trinken Troll,” “Kaptein Kaos,” “Karve” and even a Trollfest parody of Britney Spears song “Toxic.” Trollfest bring much needed satire and comedy with this video. After all, crying about politics all the time becomes rather boring.

Trollfest will be touring as part of the 2019 Wayfarers and Warriors tour alongside Korpiklaani and Turisas. Alas, they are touring in Europe. Would make a wonderful holiday present for Miss Allykat. Hint hint.
