“Taking Over” Song/Video Review

By Mindy Stevenson, Journalist

On October 8th Chicago Rock based Release(r) unveiled their debut single “Taking Over.” This is a four piece band made up of Stephen Mueller (Lead Singer), Andre Robert (Lead Guitarist), Duane James (Drums), and Jeremy Mederick (Bass). The video is what I would call a stereotypical rock video but with some soul. In the video they are playing in the dark with cuts to Stephen singing to the camera while wandering crazy eyed back and forth in the frame from lights to darkness.

“Taking Over” was produced by Nick Radovanovic, from Acceptance, who has worked with such artists as Skillet, Fire Flight, Melissa Etheridge, and Stone Sour just to name a few. I definitely can hear Nick’s influence in this song (and maybe bits of a Stone Sour sound). Although I don’t see too much uniqueness in the video, I find myself engaged through the song. It is catchy from the get go and has a roller coaster effect of ups and downs with quite an ominous feeling. Stephen tells that this song is rather personal and the honesty shows through.

”Taking Over” gives the feeling of a band that has been around for a while and is just starting to try out some new stuff. They feel glued in a good way. I am excited for this band’s future. Their vibe screams of collective potential that I can feel but not quite hear in this single.

If you have a chance to check them out I would definitely go support them. They will be playing on December 8th with Even Thieves, The Cold Mourning, and Lucky Boys Confusion at the House of Blues Chicago. I truly hope Release(r) will be taking over the rock scene soon.
