      “Adrenaline” Song Review

Los Angeles’ Victory Kid has the looks and sound of a pop punk band, especially the sound. Pop punk is really hard to be successful with because there’s so little room for the chance to do anything different with it. You have to stick pretty close to the formula, or else risk being alienated by people expecting power chords, 200 bpm’s, and snapbacks.

Giving credit where it’s due: Victory Kid really tries to mix things up. Their new song “Adrenaline” off their recently dropped EP throws a couple curves to keep things interesting. If we’re keeping with the baseball metaphors, most of their curves are balls. The intro to the song with the “main” riff then going into a punctuated verse threw me off, and felt discombobulated. Individually, each part is a strike (baseball season calls for baseball metaphors). The chorus is mosh-ready, the outro is even more mosh-ready, and the verse has a great melody to it. The biggest prop I will give the band is the unique solo in the bridge, which is something I admittedly haven’t heard a lot of. Altogether, the band has trouble moving from part to part. I can tell they’re going for making the song as quick as possible, and that deserves some props. “Adrenaline” just sounds like fitting too much into one song.

Victory Kid’s “Adrenaline” is a great effort, but leaves me in a wait-and-see attitude for their full release. In the meantime, I have a strong urge to listen to State Champs for some reason. Maybe it’s all the baseball metaphors.
