Mikey Cunningham and the Aftermath

Massive Head Wound

Album Review by Allyson Kingsley, Music Journalist

Boston Rock Radio

Is there anything more beautiful in the metal/rock world than the screaming of a wailing guitar? If you're appreciative of instrumental albums, Mikey Cunningham and the Aftermath deliver their 3rd studio album Massive Head Wound. Mikey Cunningham originates from Pennsylvania and started learning blues riffs at 8 years old. After relocating to Florida in his teen years he became entranced and enmeshed with guitar, leaning heavily on such guitar god influences as Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai, Eddie Van Halen, and Jimi Hendrix. Mikey Cunningham has played in various cover bands as well as session guitar work in studios. After some lineup changes we are gifted with Massive Head Wound which also features Gail Burnsed on bass and drummer Mikel Bullard. This fast-burning soul odyssey showcases masterful shredding genius that I can only describe as a rush of sound. Do yourselves the pleasure of blasting this masterpiece on a summer drive.

Starting off with “666” his guitar becomes his voice, thoroughly seducing you. “Black Stallion” is exactly what it says with its galloping essence and fluid flourishes along his fretboard. Title track “Massive Head Wound” is intensely strong riffs bonded with thunderous drumming. “Insomnia” is a wonderful display of his churning style that will reverberate after its conclusion. And what a perfect closer song in “Imploded” and blast this one loud as it will tantalizingly cascade across your nerve endings. This albums wails personality and is certainly not monotonous.
