DELLACOMA

Blood

Curtain Call Records

July 7, 2021

Album Review By Nina McCarthy

There seems to be a huge breakthrough of hard rock bands from Australia in the past few years such as Parkway Drive, The Amity Affliction, and Thy Art Is Murder. Those are some metal behemoths, so we’re going to tame it down just a notch and bring you some explosive Australian rock n roll with Dellacoma’s recent release, Blood.

What is unique about Blood is it was written and refined over the years on the road by Dellacoma Rio. “This album is the culmination of work, experiences and songwriting across the past 15 years. This album has been a stop-start affair since 2016. To finally hold it in my hands in 2021, three years removed from my last live Dellacoma performance, is something that I will be forever grateful for,” he states. Well worth the wait, my friends!

Meaty guitar riffs instantly catch your attention as you are blasted with explosive rock with the appropriately named opening track “Adrenaline.” Highly melodic vocals, exceptionally heavy guitar riffs, soulful lyrics, clear bass tones and superlative drumming create cathartic sounds on the album. If you’re not already rocking out and starting to sweat, then “Defiance” will take care of that with it’s Gun N’ Roses influenced sound. Rio states early Van Halen, Aeorosmith, and Guns N’ Roses as influences, and while remaining mainstream, these influences are notable in both lyrics and music.

The lead single "Kill Your Idols" was written by frontman Dellacoma Rio along with Art Struck, Rick Reynolds (Stone Horses) and Matt Cook and was performed by Dellacoma Rio (all vocals), Voya (Bad Moon Born-lead and rhythm guitars), special guest collaborator, Tracii Guns (Guns N Roses, Brides of Destruction, LA Guns- lead guitars), Jaron Gulino (Tantric, Heavens Edge, Mach 22-bass) and Australian drummer Noel Tenny. If you follow me, you know that Jaron Gulino is one of my favorite bassists, and he loans his skills on all tracks except “Defiance” and “Long As I Can See The Light.” So much great talent brought together!

“Lady Undertaker” (the most ballad-like) and “Stay” will give you time to catch your breath and cool off from the pounding bass and complementary drums on the heavier tracks. Dellacoma has many tricks up their sleeves and they certainly know how to take advantage of them.

The concluding song, “As Long As I Can See The Light'' was an exquisitely done solo piano cover of the old Creedence Clearwater Revival song from their 1970 album, Cosmo’s Factory. Impeccable! Goosebumps! Speechless! Thank you for including that! I hit re-play several times.

Blood is a collection of 11 finely crafted songs and well worth the 42 minutes out of your day. There is something for everyone on this masterpiece. The new album is officially out worldwide!! Find it on all streaming platforms and limited edition CDs! Get yours now! This is a must have album for your 2021 collection.
