Album Review By Nina McCarthy

Boston Rock Radio

Boston’s own metal/hardcore/hip hop band Inverter hit us hard with their third album, Another Avalanche. What do you do when facing an actual avalanche? Move, grab something sturdy, make room to breathe, put one arm up in the air, and hold on for your life. Phew! After listening to this brand new 32 minute CD that I received in the mail, I felt like I just survived an avalanche.

Interestingly, Inverter began only as a studio project between guitarist Bill Bracken and frontman Derek “Deek” Diedricksen until show offers started pouring in after the release of their debut album. Adding to the mix to form a full band, we have drummer Jeff Lawn (ex-7th Rail Crew for those familiar with Boston bands) and Jimmy Evangelista thwacking the bass.  Interesting fact, they were all former co-workers at WBCN-Boston when it was on the air.

There is no easing into Another Avalanche. Track #1, “No Savior,” the featured single that you can hear on Boston Rock Radio, hits hard with Deek’s distinctive vocal styling and the band’s pulverizing riffs. I’ve seen these guys live several times and the stamina and energy are infectious and I can just picture how the crowd engages with the fists in the air and heads banging.

“Dark White Devil” grabs you tight with it’s rap/nu metal verses and the catchy chorus that you will find yourself singing long after your first listen. Prong frontman,Tommy Victor, joins in on the vocals for “UB313.” This number starts off with some speedy guitar riffage and a cool added percussion. I’m not sure what the percussion was exactly, but Diedricksen has been known to play random objects on stage such as a 5 gallon white bucket, so you never know!

Songs such as “Last Summer” and “Party ‘Til You’re Dead” exhibit the band's fun-fueled energy with lyrics such as, “This ain’t no teenage horror movie we’re talking creature double feature…” and “shut up, sit down and hand me another Heineken...and do it all again until you’re dead!” I have to admit I got some chuckles out of the creative yet comical lyrics.

Interestingly, my favorite track was “Hell (Built For You)” even though it was the most divergent from what you’d expect from Inverter. It reminded me of something I’d hear from Kings & Liars from New Haven, CT (ft. members of Kingdom of Sorrow, Jasta, and These Green Eyes) with ebullient guitar and drum work...but without their signature harmonies.

Remember that avalanche I mentioned at the beginning? This 9 track album has plenty to keep your blood flowing from transferal energy that leaves you feeling like you just survived such a catastrophe. “Equal Opportunity Destroyer,” “Animatronic,” and “Beast Mode” have titles alone that exhibit the intensity Inverter is known for. So if you like great metal with some rapping, then don’t miss out on this gem. It has been available for streaming/download since February, but the hard copy discs have just arrived! Contact the band if you’d like to experience Another Avalanche.
