Album Review By Nina McCarthy

Tantric has gone through several member changes since their self-titled debut back in 2001. However, one constant is the sultry baritone vocals of Hugo Ferreira that will once again mesmerize you on Tantric's 8th studio album, The Sum of All Things.  Joining Ferreira on this album is guitarist Sebastian LeBar, bassist Jaron Gulino, and drummer Jason Hartless.  (Jon Loree is the current drummer you’ll see on tour.)

The album begins with “Alone” which is exactly what you would expect from Tantric if you’ve been a long time fan. “Alone” is structured with softer melodic verses, a grandiloquent chorus, and scattered with beautiful guitar solos. The perfect intro to the musical journey you are about to enjoy.

“Walk That Way” was the 2nd released single with a video that debuted July 23, 2021 along with the full album.  eeping with classic Tantric fashion, this song is amped up with the thunderous drums of Hartless, thumping bass of Guilino, combined with a modern twist and heavy guitar solos by LeBar that keeps the band’s music timeless. Definitely the fist pumper of the album. Perhaps they all consumed some of Gulino's Mountain Dew.

“Can’t Find This” is a well written ballad that gives us hope that true love is possible, but only with help from above. Surely just one of the many songs on this album to elicit strong emotions of pity or sadness. This also happens to be my favorite track on the album, as I'm always a sucker for a great ballad.

If you’ve seen Tantric live recently, you may have heard the first released single, “Living Here Without You,” already, which also has an accompanying video. This song gives you a hint of the elegiac lyrics that you will discover on the full album, as Ferreira sings of his yearning for a lost love. Warning: You may need a tissue for this one!

This fourteen song LP has much more for you to discover on your own, along with the re-recorded versions of previous hit singles “Breakdown” and” Down and Out." Despite the sadness that may be elicited by some of the songs, the album cover beautifully portrays a reminder that something beautiful can come out of something ugly. Kudos to the artist.

As a special bonus, the album concludes with a cover of Chris Stapleton's “Whiskey and You” originally recorded by Tim McGraw. “I drink because I’m lonesome, and I’m lonesome because I drink.”  If you haven’t been heartbroken and don't feel this song to your soul, then you are stoic or perhaps dead. I'm not much of a country fan, but I appreciate a great song when I hear it and this one was perfect for Ferreira's voice!

Produced by industry veteran Chuck Alkazian (Chris Cornell, Sponge), The Sum of All Things brings you memorable hooks, heart-wrenching lyrics, along with multi-layered vocal harmonies, keyboards, and even a guest violinist, that you will find yourself listening to over and over.  Available now on all streaming services, this album is a must add LP to any Tantric supporters' (or lovers of post-grunge rock in general) collections.
