Interview with Benny Scholl of AVOID

By Nina McCarthy

Boston Rock Radio

"Exploding out of Seattle, WA, hotly-tipped hard rock five-piece AVOID have been rapidly making a name for themselves thanks to their electrifying live show and an unabashed experimental approach to music. The result is an alchemistic audio dose of heavy hedonism; the stamp of a young act unafraid to equally embrace both their innovation and individuality."  - Band Bio

Thank you to frontman Benny Scholl for answering some questions about AVOID for Boston Rock Radio. Hear them in rotation now!

The Press Release describes your music as an “unabashed experimental.” For those unfamiliar with the band, can you elaborate on that description or describe it in your own words?

I honestly can't think of a term to describe us better. hahaha. We really just like to experiment with whatever genre and sound we're feeling that day. We just like to have fun and change things up and I really feel like that comes across in our songs

Joe Graf Jr ran the AVOID logo on his car at Daytona and the game NASCAR Heat 5 features two of your songs and you can race as Joe with the AVOID logo. How did this collaboration come about?

This collab was truly a dream come true. All of us are huge racing fans, especially our guitarist Luke and myself, since we were little kids. The video game was honestly pure luck. Really all of it was pure luck. haha. We happened to find a contact to submit our music to the gaming company and we didn't hear from them for like 4 months, and then one day out of the blue they hit us up saying they love the songs and would like to use 2 in the game. It was really mind blowing. With being on the car in real life, one of our buddies from music happened to start managing Joe Graf Jr. and when there was an opportunity to bring another sponsor onto the team, we were able to work something out. It was awesome to have them even interested to bring us on as a sponsor, very grateful we were able to get connected with a sport we've loved since day one.

“Song About James” was released as a precursor to the EP “The Burner” which landed #13 on the BIGUNS countdown on Sirius XM. Who is James and what’s his story?

If you've been following us on social media, you'll see we wrote this song about James Holzhaur from Jeopardy 😉 That's all I'll leave it as.

Wayne has been playing “HostAge At A BeAch House PArty” on BRR. First of all, what’s up with the A’s all being capitalized?

HAHAHAHA okay this is so stupid. When we were submitting the final track listing for the album I asked our guitar player Nick, "Should we capitalize the a's in 'At A' in the title??" and after contemplating it for a few minutes, Nick was like, "Let's just capitalize all the A's" and we never thought about it twice and submitted it

It’s a really fun song. What was going on in your mind while writing it?

ADHD!!!!! lol

AVOID has taken on the huge task of covering Foo Fighters with “Weenie Beenie” and the Audioslave cover of “Show Me How to Live." Come on...Dave Grohl and Chris Cornell? What made you choose these particular songs and were they a challenge for you?

We chose these two songs because A) they're songs that had MASSIVE impacts on us as musicians, especially in our formative years, and B) because we see a lot of modern day hard rock bands doing covers, but typically it's a bad pop song or trying to rewrite a Nu Metal song, which is all fine and well, but we wanted to go after some songs you don't see done every day.

Tell us about your short videos on Facebook that you call 'The Burn.' They crack me up.

In the shit year that is 2020, we really just wanted to have some light hearted goofy 30 second videos to make ya smile and forget about stuff for a second. :)

What's next for AVOID?

Just trying to navigate this new music industry and keep having fun with my best friends. Go fast and kick ass.

Any concluding comments?

And thank you again so much for having us!
