Every once in a while an album comes out that epitomizes the old saying, “never judge a book by its cover”. This is one of those times. Looking at Nehoda’s promo pic and tracklisting for But Anyways…, I geared myself up for around 40 minutes of hardcore Thrash/Death Metal. What I actually heard on this Nashville trio’s debut album could not have been further from my preconceived notions. Lesson learned, as I put the 2 ibuprofen pills back in the bottle.

I knew exactly where a bunch of cuts on But Anyways… would fit perfectly. My mind went to The Walking Dead, particularly during end scenes where our heroes are left contemplating difficult events of the day. Of course, a few songs would have to be edited to meet FCC standards.

Nehoda presents bluesy rock tracks that inspire introspection, with a myriad of follow-up questions which compelled me to wonder about the source of such anguish. The pure raw emotion so beautifully conveyed on But Anyways… made me care. It wasn’t a violent lashing-out, nor was it a cloying sob-fest. Each song is a lyrical observation of repeated disappointments from the soul in true Blues fashion. Don’t go thinking that you’ll want to join the 'choir invisible' after listening, it’s not that kind of depressing. If anything, you may form a better understanding of what it means to connect to those who are having a particularly rough time. Compassion is the main theme I came away with, a chance to get out of my own head and want to reach out to anyone who is hurting. But Anyways… encourages us to feel the feels, and we will come out all the better for it. Imagine a sort of audio catharsis with rich melodies and poignant musical details.

No matter what your interpretations are, if you’re a fan of legitimate Blues Rock, But Anyways… is absolutely worth an add to your playlist. Get ready to press that “add album” icon when Nehoda’s debut album strolls into the world on October 6th. I dare you to tell me there isn’t a single track that belongs in at least one episode of The Walking Dead.
