    Album Review By JD Rich

    Boston Rock Radio

É hora de outra análise do álbum! As you may be able to tell, this album review takes us across the pond for the third album release by Portuguese band, Places Around The Sun. And no, you do not need to use Google translate to understand a single crystal-clear word on their self-titled EP. I do, however, think the Portuguese definition of Hard Rock is slightly different than what we in the U.S. or Canada consider Hard Rock. Don’t expect the likes of Metallica, Avenged Sevenfold, or Disturbed. I picked up on more Neo-Punk/Alt Rock vibes here. Don’t misunderstand; Places Around The Sun certainly packs a punch, just not the kind that will send your brains flying across the floor. I did detect a teeny tiny hint of Iberian influences that adds a subtle unique musical watermark to the band’s sound.

If I were still a radio programmer, I would have no problem putting Places Around The Sun up against more established bands that have worn out their welcome. It’s long past time for some fresh musical blood (especially in the mainstream), and this quartet is primed to lead the way. They have the talent, a tight formation, and a listener-friendly style. In an over-saturated format, these guys keep it clear and focused without resorting to cheesy hooks or threadbare riffs. They don’t cheap-out when it comes to production values or pander to the casual listener with rehashed jams.

Anyone who yearns for something with substance will find what they’re looking for on Places Around The Sun. There’s ample variety of driving Rock and arrangements to be found on this 10-song EP. Just start at the “Intro” and let it play through all of its 36-minute glory. You can start right now, the full album is available now, and you don’t have to go around the sun to get it!
