Interview with Archon Angel Guitarist Aldo Lonobile

By Thomas Amoriello Jr.

Boston Rock Radio

Alessandria, Italy native Aldo Lonobile has been active in the European metal scene as a guitarist and producer for nearly two decades but recently became involved in a project with former Savatage, Trans-Siberian Orchestra vocalist Zak Stevens which has brought him some attention from American audiences.  Archon Angel was officially released on Valentine's Day 2020 but a live promo campaign fell victim to the pandemic.  Heavier melodic rock with sounds reminiscent of classic Savatage, this is a must for fans of this genre. The debut Fallen is brought courtesy of the Italian label Frontiers.  The lineup is rounded out by bassist Yves Campion and Marco Lazzarini on drums.  Boston Rock Radio would like to thank Mister Lonobile for this exclusive interview.

What was the songwriting process like during the making of the Achon Angel debut with Zak Stevens of Savatage and TSO fame?

The process had been very easy.  I found a very good alchemy with Zak.  He is an amazing singer with a unique tone, but he is also a great person.   I wrote the music producing a demo for him to listen to and we decided together to write songs and the best musical parts. There is, of course, a reminiscence to Savatage in the sound but it's not merely a copy.  As I said we took one of my main influences filtered through my way to write music.  Zak's wife took care of the lyrics.  She is an amazing musician as well!

In addition to being a guitarist in your own projects, what is your approach to producing other artists?

I always work to develop the original personality of the artists I work with.  We all have a musical background, shaped by our favorite bands and music and every musician puts this into their music.  The challenge is to create their own sound starting from those influences.  It's important that people recognize the sound of an artist apart from the others.  Currently I am producing the debut album of an Italian band that play a sort of symphonic progressive rock and we are working focusing on what really makes their music unique.

Who were some of your guitar and musical heroes growing up in Italy?

I love almost all the 80's/90's guitar players!   I totally love Paul Gilbert, Nuno Bettencourt, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and of course Malmsteen just to mention a few of the first names that came to my mind.  I started to play guitar in 1992. I was 15 years old and I saw on a TV music channel  a concert called Guitar Legends. It was in Sevilla, Spain and I saw on stage together Satriani, Vai, May, Bettencourt, and Joe Walsh and I totally fell in love with the instrument!

What are your go to "axes" for recording? Live? and songwriting?

I have played ESP Guitars for 20 years now.  Currently I am using different Eclipse models both for live and studio performance.  They have a great tone in my opinion and for the clean parts in the studio I have always loved the classic Stratocaster sound!

Obviously with an early 2020 release many plans were hampered in the live performance department for Archon Angel,  are you working on new music for this project or was this a one off production?

Yes you are right!  There were plans to play live with Archon Angel and several dates booked as well as festivals but due to the pandemic everything has been canceled or postponed until I don't know when.  There is the intention to give a follow up to our debut album but there is still not anything planned yet.

What is a fun hobby or activity that you enjoy outside of music to help keep you grounded?

I am a cross fitter.   I love the sport and the mindset around it.  It helps to develop self-confidence and also helps to step out of the comfort zone.  Another thing that I love is to cook with my daughters on Sunday mornings!  :)
